DRAFT
Google Drive for desktop is an app which synchronizes your Drive with a folder on your desktop. So you don’t have to log in into your browser to access your files.
The goal of Drive for desktop is to keep your files in sync between the cloud and your computer. After syncing, the files on your computer match the files in the cloud. If you edit, delete, or move a file in one location, the same change happens in the other location. That way, your files are always up to date and can be accessed from any device.
We encourage you to seriously consider the option of using it. That might be especially useful for ordinary situations like workers who go to the village, do not have an internet connection, and yet need access to essential documents they have forgotten to download beforehand. This can also be useful in the office in case of internet disruption to allow everyone who needs it to keep working on Google documents. Think also of unexpected situations, like when the internet is unavailable because of social unrest in the country.
It is not a backup solution but rather a sync solution. But if you think of it, that might be used in your backup strategy. You can sync the user’s files to their hard drive, then sync them to your NAS or backup them to an external drive or to the cloud (like by using Crashplan).
Google Drive for desktop is an app you can download which is available both for Windows and Mac (it is not available for servers). You can access it by clicking on its icon on the taskbar icon
Drive for desktop allows you to backup files from your computer to the Drive and/or manage how to sync Google Drive with your computer.
Within the app you can sync many accounts.
You can manage how much local storage you use and where your content is located by configuring Drive to stream or mirror your files and folders.
If you choose to mirror files all the content of your Drive will be downloaded. If you add more than one account in Drive for desktop, a separate folder will be created for each account with different settings if you want.
There are some other settings you can change, like the Microsoft Office integration, the Drive letter used in your explorer and whether you want contextual commands in File explorer.
Office integration allows you to get an alert when someone makes a change to an Office file stored in Drive for desktop and shared with other people who turned on real-time presence.
With the contextual commands you can share a file directly from your explorer exactly as you would do in Drive. Just right-click the file and click . It will use the same level of permissions (Viewer, Commenter, Editor).
You can also decide if you want to be offered to backup external devices to your Drive when you connect them.
In Preferences you can also decide to throttle the bandwidth allocation
If you click the Drive for desktop icon you can also access the powerful search feature
You can both manage My Drive and Shared drives
For each folder in your Shared drives, you can decide to stream them or download them
The app shows you the activity for you to check that your local copy is up to date
When you open Files from your local copy on your computer it opens files you created with Google apps directly in your browser, and other types of files open in their regular applications. If you get offline, you might not be able to open certain files should you not have the corresponding app locally installed.
