SIL Information Security Training for End Users: Secure Your Data
The key word when it comes to backup recovery is TESTING TESTING TESTING
You must be absolutely sure that you can rely on your backups in case something happens.
When you have to do a restoration this not the time to realize that
- you no longer have the recovery key (if your backup is encrypted)
- The backup is unreadable
- The requested restoration date or version is not available in the list
- …
In previous components, we've introduced several backup software. These include
Synology drive
C2 backup
Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows
SyncBackFree
Acronis true image
CrashPlan
Let’s see how we can recover user's files with each of them
Synology drive
If you use Synology Drive in Sync mode, you simply have the actual copy of your files. This is not a backup but a copy of your files on the server for offline use.
But if you chose the backup mode, from the client, select the Backup task and click Restore..
Select the restore date
You can even select a time
Notice the options to Browse for previous versions. This will list the available versions. You can also decide to download the files instead of restoring them to their original location. If you prefer to restore them on place, then select the files or folder to recover and click Restore
You then receive a confirmation about the restore process
Now what if the client is unavailable ? You can restore files from the NAS itself using the Synology Drive Admin Console. Open the console. Click Team Folder and click Version Explorer.
C2 backup
With C2 backup, Synology cloud backup solution, you have three options for restoring files.
You can restore using 1. Hyper Backup, 2. your browser or 3. the standalone Backup explorer app.
- Hyper Backup
Select the job and click the magnifier icon
Select the version you want to restore
- You browser
Log in to your C2 account
Click on your backup task and provide the encryption key if requested
Brows
Select the backup version on the right pane
Select the files to restore and click download
- the standalone Hyper Backup Backup explorer app
Download the app for your NAS from the Download center and run HyperBackupExplorer.exe. Choose “Browse backup in Synology C2 Storage” and log in using your credentials
Select your backup task
Browse the backup history using the arrows and right click the item to copy to your hard drive
Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows
Press the hamburger button, select the backup job and select Restore file
Make sure the right backup location is selected and choose the Restore point depending on the restoration date you want. Validate the summary to open the backup browser.
In the backup browser, find the files to recover and select whether to restore them and overwrite or keep the original or to copy them elsewhere.
